About

About this site

tabecal is a database of calories and nutrition for Japanese restaurant chains, covering 30,399 items across 191 chains.

Look up the calories of a chain restaurant meal and you will often find different numbers in different places, because many are estimated from ingredients and portion sizes. This site publishes only the nutrition information each chain discloses officially, with no estimates. Where a chain does not publish a value, we leave it blank rather than filling it in.

Chain menus change quickly, and figures shift when portion sizes or recipes are revised. So we review what we list every day and reflect any change in the official disclosure. The “last verified” date on each chain page is when that review last happened.

What is included

Energy (kcal) is available for all 30,399 items. 112 chains also publish protein, fat and carbohydrate, and 28,776 items include salt. The pentagon chart on each item page shows how those compare with the Japanese daily reference intake.

Chains that do not publish nutrition information are not listed. We would rather omit a chain than fill the gap with guesswork.

Before you rely on this

Why this site exists

It started with a stretch of eating out and wanting to know what it had added up to. Searching for a single item returned different numbers on different sites, with no way to tell which to trust.

Most of those numbers turned out to be estimates from ingredients and portion sizes. Estimates are not the problem — the problem is that they sit alongside official figures looking identical. What was missing was a list of only the official numbers, with their status made clear. That is what this is.

Hence the rules: chains that publish nothing are left out, and fields a chain does not disclose stay blank. Trustworthiness of what is here matters more than covering everything.

About the operator

A man in his late twenties working in sales, living in the Tokai region. I played competitive sports through university and weighed a steady 65 kg.

Within about three years of starting work I was up to around 80 kg. The pandemic put me on remote work with almost no commute, lunch came from convenience stores and dinner from restaurant chains nearly every day — and I knew the calories were a problem but could not stop. What made it real was the number on my annual health check, and an old university friend telling me my face had got rounder.

The first year was a string of failures. Home cooking did not stick; there was always a day I wanted to eat out or could not be bothered to cook. I exercised regularly, yet intake still beat expenditure, and I lost only about 3 kg. The portion sizes I had learned as an athlete were the hard part to unlearn.

What changed things was not giving up eating out but changing what I ordered. I set two rules: at least 20 g of protein and no more than 10 g of fat per meal, plus a daily calorie ceiling worked out with a calculator. Just keeping those two rules in mind changed what I picked from the menu, and the calories came down on their own — the morning set at a gyudon chain as lunch, salads as the main dish at a Western-style family restaurant, and so on.

The result was −18 kg over three years, and I am now lighter than I was at university. Nothing special did it — daily exercise and not breaking the rules. What my own experience taught me is that when it comes to losing weight, food matters more than anything else. And the hardest part of fixing my diet while eating out was simply not being able to find the correct calorie figures quickly. This site is what I wished I had then.

I am not a nutrition professional. What this site offers is the figures each chain publishes, organised as they are, plus the general reference values needed to read them (Japan’s Dietary Reference Intakes). It cannot give advice for an individual’s health situation — please consult a doctor or registered dietitian for that.

Corrections, listing requests and removal requests are welcome through the contact page, and I act on them promptly.
